You may be surprised by the number of emails and phone calls we receive asking for advice from those restoring their own boat. We’re always happy to help, and hopefully have made a positive contribution to the amateur restorer. Yet others ask why we would want to help anyone restoring their own boat, taking money out of our own pocket. There are a lot of reasons for this, but a few important ones immediately come to mind.

To begin with, I was a first time restorer once and needed help. Had it not been for a professional restorer who was willing to give up a few minutes in his busy day, my first project could have been a disaster. Many mistakes were avoided and that 1950 Riviera turned out quite nice. I’ve always been grateful to that gentleman and his interest in helping me avoid costly mistakes. You might say I’m implementing my own form of ‘karma’ by returning the favor to the amateur community.

Another reason is the occasional boat I’ll see at a show…that is frankly a poor and mistake-ridden restoration. Incorrect this, poor that, and basically a botched job that results in a poorly restored boat that has lost much of its value and in some cases doesn’t appear seaworthy. Many times I think, ‘sure wish they would have called me or another restorer, these problems could have been avoided.’ Now it will require an even larger investment in time and money to correct the mistakes.

Most important for us, however, is our true passion for these beautiful watercraft…and the desire to see them done correctly so they last for future generations. It would be a true disservice to these boats and the hobby if we refused to offer advice and thus allowed incorrect techniques, products, and poor decisions to proceed when they can easily be avoided. We’re not the only restoration shop that offers advice. Most restorers I know share the same feelings about these boats and are only too happy to share their thoughts and advice on how things should be done. I applaud all amateur restorers, as they are making a huge commitment in time, money, energy, and emotional ups and downs to make one of their dreams a reality. My advice is don’t hesitate to contact us or another restoration shop for advice…you’ll be glad you did.
