Occasionally we receive requests to quote a complete restoration that will produce a guaranteed show winner, a one hundred point ‘museum quality’ boat…or what many in the hobby call a ‘trophy boat’. Without exception we politely decline and refer them to other shops that may be able to accommodate them. And there are shops out there that strive for that quest. True, we’ve done boats that have done well in shows and we’re always pleased for the owner when that happens. That being said, it’s not our primary goal when restoring these beautiful craft.

What, you say? Do you really mean that? Well, yes we do. Our goal has always been to provide a safe, reliable, and beautiful boat that’s done correctly so you can enjoy her. That’s right…enjoy. By that I mean ‘using’ the boat...not storing her in a garage for the occasional show where it will either sit on a trailer or sit unused moored at the dock free from all signs of use so judges will see that perfect finish and wrinkle free upholstery. Don’t misunderstand, I’m not knocking those owners…they’re just not the clientele we’re catering to.

First of all, I’ve judged countless ACBS shows and have never seen a one hundred point boat. Along with that, I’ve seen boats fresh off a six figure restoration (not from our shop, thank goodness) that still fall short, frustrate the owner, and drive the ever-diligent restorer crazy from doing and re-doing the same boat to get her ‘just right’ so she can win that elusive trophy. Attempting to produce ninety-eight or ninety-nine point boats is not only financially prohibitive for most boaters; it will also strain the best of client-restorer relationships and usually end up with one bad-mouthing the other. No thank you, we’ll stick with those boaters with reasonable expectations that not only want a correct restoration, but are also looking for a good value

I could be mistaken, but most…if not all of our boats are ‘user’ boats. Their owners take great pride and satisfaction climbing into the cockpit with family, friends, and even pets to share these historical and fun boats with anyone eager for a ride. Eventually scuff marks from shoes, dock rash, scratches and other ‘holidays’ are going to occur while using the boat. But the pure enjoyment and smiles on the captain’s and passengers’ faces make most minor imperfections worth it. Good for them if they go to a show and win a trophy. But they know the true spirit of this great hobby is in enjoying these floating works of art by ‘using’ them.

Happy boating,
